Persuasive Essay On Teen Pregnancy - 1634 Words

Although the teen pregnancy rate has declined some, it remains a major problem in the state of Arkansas. It is a social problem that is affecting all communities in some Arkansas cities. With Arkansas topping the charts with a high rate of teenage pregnancy, something needs to be done. There are not enough prevention programs in the state to help these young women. Out of all the young teens that have become pregnant, they usually had no want to become mothers. Arkansas should have more sex education programs for teenagers because it will curb teenage pregnancy by providing teenagers with the information and guidance they need to know about sex. According to the Arkansas Center for Health Improvement (2016), â€Å"In Arkansas, the teen†¦show more content†¦The lack of knowledge about sex first starts with the teen’s parents. Most parents are afraid or too busy to talk to their teens about sex because they feel that talking about sex will make the child want to have sex. With this mindset, it leaves teens to get the wrong information about sex from videos, movies, and friends, which could cause the teen to become pregnant. It is a known fact that besides the fear and time not allowing that some parents do not know what age they should start talking to their children about sex. According to Louanne Weston, Ph.D., parents have always are the question, â€Å"How old should a child be before we start talking about sext?† The answer to that question is â€Å"Younger than you think† stated Louanne Weston, Ph.D. (2006). There is no wrong or right age to start talking to your child about sex, chil dren are curious by nature and parents when asked no matter the age should never avoid a â€Å"teachable moment† when asked a question by a child (Weston 2006). As the child goes older you should have an open door policy with the teenager so that they will be like they can talk to you about anything, including sex. With the high teenage pregnancy rate plaguing Arkansas, the state according to Talk Business Politics has spent â€Å"$143 million annually† to take care of teen mothers (2017).
